Lies 04:51
that was someone else's mistake i really deserve this piece of cake i've never been given a fair shake i could've made it big if i'd gotten just one break the lies that we tell the lies that we tell ourselves to get by you wear it well you wear it well and so do i on monday i'll give it up for good if i knew how to please you i would i'd help you out man if i could i'm not a misanthrope i'm just misunderstood the lies that we tell the lies that we tell ourselves to get by you're guilty as hell you're guilty as hell and so am i i'm gonna pay back all i borrowed i'm gonna start first thing tomorrow must be a reason for all of this sorrow because there is a god there is a god i say this with all sincerity the truth is a matter of degree i could quit any time i please i'm not an addict man i just have a disease the lies that we tell the lies that we tell ourselves to get by isn't it swell isn't it swell we'll never die i've got all the time in the world now i'm gonna change as soon as i learn how someday your cities are all gonna burn down because there is a god there is a god

Oh Amelia 03:45
just now a shadow went creeping over your face like something passed between the sun and the earth the wheels are turning i see you trying to figure out the difference between your cost and worth oh amelia oh i feel ya you hurt too i'm not a poet i'm a stenographer i'm not an artwork i'm an old picture frame i'm not your lover i'm your biographer i'm not the player i'm the rules of the game oh amelia oh i feel ya but i hurt too i'm not above stealing kisses from you if that won't get me arrested when it comes to love we do what we gotta do we've got so much invested these big old shoulders just put your head down on one it's nothing can't be cured by a good, hard cry there's never been someone with so much love to give once in a while would you take some of mine oh amelia oh i feel ya it's only fair i would love to share my hurt with you if you need a change i'll go back where i came i'll never give you up no not i i'd rearrange the stars to spell your name with one left over to dot the i just now a shadow went creeping over your face like something passed between the sun and the earth

gazing at a constellation trying to connect the dots alone as a splinter nation with the motherland in my thoughts the army has all deserted the war is all but lost the lawyers are drafting treaties and adding up the cost it's been a warm february throw the windows open wide the rose bush is starting to flower try to find the strength to go outside spring keeps showing up earlier and summer always overstays it's been a warm february i guess they're all warm these days i rose today at the daybreak awoken by a bird decided i should finally take the christmas tree out to the curb it was dry as the bones of your mother brown and dead and bare we used to be among the living now there's needles everywhere it's been a warm february the dog senses something strange the air feels mean and electric like something's permanently changed pile up all of my failures set the whole thing ablaze it's been a warm february i guess they're all warm these days

hey little california could i come out and see you sometime could we drive up the coast all the way to the oregon line i've been living in an east coast cloud everything i touch is gray, grime, gloom i need a little california i need it soon hey little california was there anything that i could've done when you took me by the arm and you showed me around the land of the sun did you think that we could make this work did you take the time to think it through oh my little california i've got it bad for you i wasn't looking for a new place to start but i've got a vagabond heart you sunkissed temptress i know what you are you're far, so far hey little california well i guess you know things aren't what they seem maybe my little california is nothing but a california dream i could hang out on the east coast hold it all together for another day maybe a little california goes a long way i wasn't looking for a new place to start but i've got a vagabond heart you sunkissed temptress i know what you are you're far, so far hey little california i know we got off to a really late start and there's a lot of miles between us but there's a little california in my heart

the sun goes down we're another day closer to dying what did you make of the day or did you just throw it away i think it's gonna come up again so won't you knock off the crying nothing's an absolute loss so come on down from your cross there are no callings in life there's only what you have the guts to try follow through or it dies and no one knows it better than i another trip around the sun what do you got to show for it a dream that's been ground into dust so sweep it up if you must tomorrow's flying in on the wings of all that came before it i'd make it count if i were you so do as i say not as i do still such a long way to go til you can even start to glimpse the end so much you don't know start over when the sun comes up again mirror mirror on the wall behind the bar who's the loneliest by far the sun goes down we're another day closer to dying what do you pray on at night before you turn out the light somewhere someone's keeping track of all of your lying get in the back of the line your sins are no greater than mine write down every word that i say put it in a book high on your shelf i'm gonna need it someday when i get tired of talking to myself when i get tired of talking to myself when i get tired of talking to myself

you love the sunrise your camera hanging around your neck i couldn't find you but you were right where i'd expect on an eastern beach or a western plateau sunrise alone you love the sunrise you hang your pictures on the wall i stop and question if there's a point to this at all to you it's early but to me it's getting late and the sunrise won't wait you love the new day the rebirth the cleansing of regret i only see the dark edge the shadow i've never seen the sunrise i've only seen it set you love the sunrise the dark horizon newly lit you feel god's presence i'll have to take your word for it i see glory in a heart filled with pain and a sky filled with rain you've got your rebirth the new day the cleansing of regret i've only got my shadow the dark edge i've never seen the sunrise i've only seen it set you love the sunrise the light refracted through the clouds you have convictions i'm only certain of my doubts you think you're lifting me but i'm dragging you down i'll see you around

we're just bits of matter held together by strands of silly string i've heard the chatter you're unraveling you rot from the inside when you spend too long underground you need to get outside take a good long look around what's the matter the cat got your tongue she used to be your muse back when we were young is anything sadder than a dream that's been bloodied and battered you're going down the ladder 'cause you don't know what matters when this planet is just a fireball in space you'll still be enchanted by another pretty face i read your letter halfway through at most you should've known better 'cause i don't believe in ghosts what's the matter you don't have a friend your old ones know how this is all gonna end is anything sadder i don't think it's possible baby your dream's gonna shatter 'cause you don't know what matters maybe someday somewhere i'll see you coming up behind me won't hold my breath but you know where to find me what's the matter got no reason to live did you think i'd have any fucks left to give is anything sadder than a poet in love with his shadow it's all gonna shatter you're bloodied and battered 'cause you think you still matter

i see you drove in from the leafy suburbs to grace your old favorite haunts your baby girl has always gotten whatever baby girl wants but at the end of the night you'll go back to where you're comfortable with your own kind and we'll just go on living in the city you left behind oh the city you left behind looks like life is solid gold on the region's number one sales team got yourself a boat and baby girl some implants ain't that the american dream whatever it was you were looking for i hope that's what you'll find but no one here ever speaks your name in the city you left behind oh the city you left behind you've got good takeout chinese and appleby's is open til ten but white flight is so '90s how soon until we see you again how soon when the shit went down you told the world how much you hurt for your hometown your friends all said prayers for you and hoped you all were safe and sound but the only trouble you see is when your grass gets too high and the association gives you a fine you never had to worry about that here in the city you left behind oh the city you left behind whatever it was you were looking for i hope that's what you'll find but no one here ever speaks your name in the city you left behind oh the city you left behind

first time i saw her face was on the hottest day of the hottest summer we'd ever seen living on elliston place she'd drop in to beat the heat we were just nineteen she soaked up the sun her skin the color of a caramel candy oh we fell in love at least one of us did a beginning and an end i'd have followed her anywhere if she'd given me a reason pity the perpetual friend helping his object of desire through heartbreak season we said our goodbyes the day the summer heat finally relented i think i knew even then nothing would ever feel more for real texas goes on for days get your heart broke in el paso you'll forget her by houston but she was in this phase i'd win her over in dallas and by austin i'd be losing oh i wish i hurt just enough to justify my effort but oh you can't lose what you never had all that remained was a thousand dollar car and a thousand miles of highway she never could be restrained just ask all the boys who found it out the hard way she soaked up the moon still glowing last time i saw her i learned pretty soon i was right nothing's ever felt more for real you can have anything for a minute it's the holding on that's so damn hard a restless heart isn't lost if you don't win it it just keeps running never given never scarred this city sucks your soul just to find a quiet bar is such a bloody hassle if it weren't for rock n roll think i'd be lying in her arms in some suburban castle oh that's just a lie i tell myself to justify my obsession i'm doing alright but once in awhile i just want to feel more for real

Goodbye City 04:23
pagoda hill a man can still find sanctuary out among the squirrels and whippoorwills pit bulls bark from dawn to dark the old man on the bench says he's the mayor of the park oh hello there mr. boh you're giving me the side-eye is there something i should know grit and pluck and rotten luck and dreams that steal away at night in mayflower trucks all my friends found the greener grass i tell them all they can kiss my ass what they're looking for i'll never know but here's my hand won't you say hello to goodbye city francis key oh say i see your bridge out in the distance no one crosses it for free cars and boats and fancy coats the world is on the move tonight but memory only floats all my friends say to start anew it isn't something i'm inclined to do she was the first girl i ever knew who cared enough to bring me to goodbye city goodbye city isn't it a shame we found each other so late in the game don't know about you but i've had a few too many bad experiences time for something new all the world is a speck of dust even iron men turn to rust sure as rivers flow to the seas i think i've finally made my peace with goodbye city goodbye city goodbye city
